UTI Bachelor Divinity degree is designed to help students grow closer to Christ, become grounded in the Bible and theology, develop a biblical worldview, and serve God in various kinds of Christian ministry and leadership. This degree also provides an excellent foundation if the student plans to continue at UTI for the Master of Divinities degree. It runs for a minimum of three years full-time. Admission is open to applicants with A' Level and O' Level certificates or their equivalents.

FEATURES OF THE CURRICULUM
1. Multi-dimensional. Equipping for ministry in Christ’s church involves a number of dimensions. These include

i) A thorough and responsible theological foundation which grounds the student in the knowledge, understanding and use of the Scriptures,
ii) Cultivation of spiritual maturity and the formation of Christian character,

iii) Perception of the ways in which God works in the church and the world in the past, present and future,

iv)Development of the resources, abilities and methods which enable God’s servants, by the empowering of the Holy Spirit, to fulfill their calling. Learning in the setting of community is especially emphasized.

2. Integrative. The philosophy underlying UTI curriculum is that schooling does not interfere with student's integral education. It seeks also to avoid the dangers in such an approach that theory has no practical significance and practice has no theoretical base. The focus of the curriculum is to combine theory and practice or foundation and operation, presenting students with a strong framework of biblical truth and cognitive learning which leads them on to ‘see’ (theoria) the personal spiritual application and practical ministry implementation.

3. Progressive. The foundational courses in the first year aim to help students make a smooth transition into the theological foundations upon which Church unity is based. The focus is more on content and background rather than critical issues, although the latter are not totally ignored. Whenever possible, some practical lessons from each other could be included.

4. Field Education. Field Education is an educational method that seeks to incorporate in the curriculum regular, supervised and evaluated opportunities for inter-relating theological learning with experience in actual ministry be experience. This being the case, it is an integral part of the BD/MDiv. curriculum. This is designed to help the students through their ministry in the church and the world, achieve the following objectives:

a) Understand more fully the responsibility and requirements of their vocation (as pastor, teacher, church worker, counselor, missionary, etc.) to which they have been called to serve;

b) Master personal and group methods of observation, reflection, evaluation and planning for ministry which will allow them to integrate academic knowledge, spiritual gifts and skills — particularly, human relationship skills — to specific ministry situations;

c) Observe and learn from supervisors and church leaders in order to develop competence in ministry skills (e.g. preaching, teaching, pastoral care, leadership, etc.);

d) Master methods of personal discipline sufficient for them to exhibit standards of reliability and accountability expected of the ministers of God; and

e) Experience different kinds of ministry in a variety of settings in the church and the world.
These basic components of the field education shall provide both broadly-based and in-depth ministerial experiences for the students. It shall comprise the following components:
Church visitation and discussion
Internships or Pastoral placement (during long semester break)

PLACEMENT AND INTERNSHIP
Placements and internships shall be done with partner churches, Para-church organizations and other approved settings. The institution shall reserve the right to determine placements and internships and each student will be placed under a supervisor. The student may spend between three to six weeks on ministry associated task within the Church.

MINISTRY CERTIFICATE IN CHAPLAINCY EDUCATION
 Chaplaincy Education

It is through education that the field of chaplaincy will grow and replenish itself in years to come. UTI is exploring the growth in chaplaincy education and what this means for the future through educating effective chaplains.

This course focuses on tasks critical for preparing professional chaplains for effective ministry, including:

•           Synthesizing current scholarship and practitioner expertise about the nature of effective chaplaincy;

•           Evaluating the extent to which theological schools can and should support the development of effective chaplains;

•           Identifying specific skills and competences required for chaplaincy, both universally and in specific sectors;

•           Analyzing how theological education currently supports the development of those skills and competencies; and

•           Supporting theological educators in strengthening their scholarship, their curricula, and their partnerships with clinical educators to better train chaplains in light of broader changes in Nigerian religious demographics.

 THEOLOGY OF STRUGGLE
The Theology of Struggle
"It is the Church in the society. The Church always plays a role in the society even in making the people impoverished. She has also a role to make them free from oppression.

She has been into the struggle for nationhood, for human dignity and liberation from oppression since the time of Moses, to Jesus Christ and until the Church of today's context." ~ Archbishop Antonio Ablon

Theology of Struggle, a theology rooted in the history and culture of a people who have endured colonial oppression at the hands of Spain, North America, and Japan, as well as neo-colonialism and home-grown dictatorship.

Because Christianity has played a role in assisting the history of oppression in the Philippines, a theology of struggle must include a "struggle in theology,” to wrest Christian symbols from the hands of the oppressors and return them to the poor.

This theology which is an aspect of Liberation Theology and linked to the popular Philippino Bishop Antonio Ablon, shall be developed and studied within the context of the Nigeria situation as an aspect in critical theological investigation for students undergoing programmes for the award of bachelor of divinities degree.
